Upskill your new or existing team without taking them away from the business

Investing in your team’s technical skills is essential for growth, whether you’re onboarding new hires or helping your current staff take their capabilities to the next level. Our Part-Time Academy offers a flexible, part-time solution that delivers cutting-edge skills while allowing your employees to remain fully integrated into your business.

With a focus on remote learning, the programme ensures your team can upskill from the comfort of your office or their home – giving you full visibility into their progress. This means no need for long-term absences or disruptions to day-to-day operations.

Whether you’re training new recruits or upskilling experienced developers, our programme is designed to provide practical, industry-recognised skills that prepare participants to contribute more effectively to your business from the moment they graduate.

The programme includes 3.5 hours of weekly taught content, broken into:

  • 2 hours of lectures
  • 1 hour of seminars
  • 30 minutes of one-to-one mentoring

Participants also benefit from optional study groups, drop-in sessions, and access to dedicated debugging support. We recommend at least 8 hours of weekly self-study to maximise learning.

Block 1: Core Skills (Weeks 1–2)

We ease students into the programme with a balanced introduction to essential concepts and practical exercises. Students will meet their mentor, who will support them throughout the course.

Topics covered:

  • Distributed version control
  • Visualising function executions
  • Problem-solving strategies
  • Interpreting documentation
  • Debugging

Block 2: JavaScript Fundamentals (Weeks 3–10)

Participants dive into JavaScript, covering foundational practices like pair programming, test-driven development, and writing clean, maintainable code. This block builds a solid base for any JavaScript project.

Topics covered:

  • Test-driven development (unit testing)
  • Pair programming
  • Variable scope
  • Higher-order functions and closures
  • Data structure design
  • Handling asynchronous processes
  • Making API requests

Block 3: Back-End Development (Weeks 11–15)

This block focuses on server design, interacting with databases, and creating secure, reliable applications. By the end, participants will have a live server added to their portfolio.

Topics covered:

  • RESTful APIs
  • CRUD operations
  • Express.js framework
  • MVC architecture
  • SQL and database seeding
  • Integration testing
  • Error handling and CI/CD

Block 4: Front-End Development (Weeks 16–20)

We explore front-end technologies with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and React. Students will learn to build interactive web applications, culminating in a portfolio-ready project.

Topics covered:

  • Semantic HTML and responsive CSS
  • DOM manipulation
  • React (components, lifecycle hooks)
  • API integration
  • Single-page application routing

Case Studies

NHS Digital

NHS Digital partner with us to upskill their graduate schemes, ensuring they had a strong foundation in software development before joining their teams. The academies delivered practical programming skills, preparing participants to contribute effectively to their roles from day one.

KPMG

We worked with KPMG to deliver academies for their Technology Engineering Graduate Programme. Designed to align with their specific business needs, the programme equipped participants with the technical expertise required to excel in client-facing projects.

It has been fantastic working with Northcoders over the past few months and to see the entire cohort graduate. The KPMG x Northcoders programme’s varied curriculum has advanced each person’s tech capabilities and given them new, valuable skills which they can apply to their roles within the business. That is something to celebrate as we continue to inspire, educate and empower young tech talent.
